Spread over 14 years, that implies about 1,000 scopes a year at a time when interest in the long scopes was waning. Production was higher when things like 4-position match shooting were popular. If #18,000 was made about 1949, maybe the OP's scope dates from the early 1950s.

Hello to all and would like to say that although this my first post I have enjoyed reading the various threads
occasionally for some time. Many very informative.
I have always enjoyed shooting different bench and varmint rifles I have built over the years.
On 3 of these I have the older external adjustment
Unertls.
I have always been curious as to the year of manufacture of these.
All were bought used so I dont have a clue . all have a serial number and wondered if there were any records kept?
